Red Shale Island: Co-curated by Milwaukee-based artists and storytellers Lillith Forsythe and Cidney Owen

In the summer of 1975, biologists Frederick F. Boggins and Julia O. Hickman disappeared during a routine exploration off the Mid Coast. Their disappearance remains unsolved. Now, nearly 50 years later, crates containing copious amounts of specimens, artifacts, and field logs have been found washed up on the shore of Lake Michigan. Restored and on public display, the findings of Boggins and Hickman present unsettling possibilities of what lies in the waters of the Midwest.

Human Condition: A Study of the Body & Live Music
This Gallery Night & Day, explore the Charles Allis Art Museum’s newest community exhibition, Human Condition: A Study of the Body. Featuring works from local and regional artists, the exhibition reflects on resilience, vulnerability, memory, and transformation — offering a deeply intimate exploration of what it means to be human. While here, step inside one of Milwaukee’s most beautiful historic mansions and discover the Allis’ permanent collection of paintings, prints, bronzes, and decorative arts displayed much as they were when Charles and Sarah Allis lived here. Enjoy live music Friday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. and a cash bar. Free and open to all.

New Acquisitions: The Work of Marc Chagall
David Barnett Gallery presents original lithographs by innovative modernist Marc Chagall. Highlighting works from several series, this exhibition reveals the range of Chagall’s poetic vision and vocabulary. A renowned colorist, Chagall often infused compositions with vibrant pigment. This trait prompted Picasso to remark in the 1950s, “When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is.” Chagall was also skilled at letting line and form speak for itself, as demonstrated in his works in black and white. The Legend Lives On – 50 Years Later
In remembrance of the tragic event of November 10, 1975, this exhibition marks the 50th Anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. However, the legend lives on in both art and popular culture. Included in this show are original paintings of the boat under construction and of the completed Edmund Fitzgerald.  Models, photographs, and other Fitzgerald ephemera will also be on view for this special display linked to what was the largest ship to travel the Great Lakes at the time of her launch in 1958. From 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, enjoy a Gallery Talk and Book Signing with Christopher Winters, photographer, Great Lakes Maritime Authority, and Author of The Legend Lives On – Commemorative 50th Anniversary Edition.

Art From the Heart 
Tony Busalacchi, a 92-year-old Milwaukee native and artist, will be hosting an art gallery to benefit Capuchin Community Services (CCS). More than 100 original artworks, including mobiles, stabiles, collages, montages and more, created by Busalacchi and others will be made available to the public in exchange for a donation to CCS. Funds raised through Art from the Heart will support the mission of Capuchin Community Services. The Capuchins attend to the spiritual and basic needs of people experiencing homelessness, poverty and hunger through their two sites: St. Ben’s Community Meal and the House of Peace. In 2024, Capuchin Community Services provided nearly 39,000 meals at St. Ben’s and provided food assistance for 21,390 community members at the House of Peace, including more than 3,200 Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes. Since 2018, Tony and his wife Pat held similar art fundraisers benefiting CCS, raising approximately $250,000 for CCS to provide meals, food pantry items, clothing and much more for people experiencing homelessness and poverty.

Safari! & Alchemy!  A wild, Collaborative Conversation
SAFARI! Lions, elephants, rhinos and giraffes, oh my! Photographers Jeannée Sacken and Michael Briselli exhibit their giclée images of endangered animals taken on location in southern Africa. Signed copies of Sacken’s, The Women Who Stand Between, featuring the Mambas — a fierce, all-female, anti-poaching unit in Zimbabwe — are available.
ALCHEMY! Mix lime, sand, soda … heat to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit and voila — liquid glass! How magic is that ? Using tools that date back to Roman era, one can blow and sculpt glass into many forms. Then infuse these pieces with an incredible array of stunning colors. Everything is done through interacting with fire. Intrigued?

Queens Don’t Have to Smile
Rosy Petri is a self-taught mixed media artist and storyteller from Milwaukee. Petri was honored as part of the 2025 Black Excellence cohort, and a Digital Humanities Fellow at the Wisconsin Museum of Quits and Fiber Arts. Petri’s work can be viewed in several prestigious collections, including the Baird Center, the James Museum, University of Indiana, University of Wisconsin Whitewater, Bell Hooks Center at Berea College, The Pfister Hotel, Hunger Task Force, Northwestern Mutual, African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee County Courthouse. She is currently a member of the Women of Color Quilters Network, Spectrum School of Art Gallery, and the Kujichagulia Producer’s Cooperative.
