Great modern music sparks great modern art. The David Barnett Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition that explores the relationship between music and the visual arts. This three-part exhibit will showcase artworks from our collection by artists acquired by the composer George Gershwin who said “Music is design — melody is line; harmony is color;” 24 original woodcuts from Wassily Kandinsky’s seminal artist’s-book Klänge from the original edition published in November 1912; and David Barnett’s newest drawings and paintings inspired by Gershwin’s music, which were created during a live piano session of Gershwin’s music.

We the People: Portraits of Veterans in America

Participation in the Blue Star Museums program last summer has prompted the Grohmann Museum to find new ways to explore veterans’ contributions to American industry through art. The museum is grateful to showcase Mary Whyte’s watercolor series, WE THE PEOPLE: Portraits of Veterans in America, a project that ties the art of labor to the impact of veterans’ work throughout our country.

Renowned watercolor artist Mary Whyte has captured scenes of working America and honored the nation’s working class throughout her career, and in this remarkable series, she has depicted military veterans of all ages and in all walks of life. For this show, Whyte traveled the country, interviewing each individual featured in this exhibition over the course of seven years.

Ellen Enriquez and Patricia Buchhaber: Photography, painting, drawing

Pat was a medical illustrator for a surgery department for four years before going on to medical school and a pathology practice. Since then, she has managed to maintain her artistic life. Because of her love for animals, pets and wildlife, these became her favorite subjects. Ellen’s lifelong immersion in her craft began with the guidance of her father in the darkroom of their family home. Looking at the world with an eye toward the details of everyday life, her work transitioned into tales of beautiful emotional art framed in eye-arresting mysteries.

Behind the Queen with Edessa School of Fashion

Behind the Queen is a 35mm black and white photographic exhibition by Leonardt Horák, presented by Edessa School of Fashion, exploring drag, transformation, fashion, and self presentation across Wisconsin.

The project follows drag performers through a visual progression from rural environments, where they are photographed outside of full drag presentation, into more urban and constructed images where garments, styling, performance, and character become increasingly visible.

Through portraiture, fashion, and textured environments, the work frames drag not only as performance, but as a form of self authorship, artistic labor and transformation.

Originally developed as Edessa School of Fashion’s 2024 calendar project, Behind the Queen quickly expanded into a larger exhibition format. Produced under an intense timeline, the project brought together performers, designers, stylists, and creative collaborators, including garments and accessories created by designers and by the queens themselves.

Returning to the work now, Horák sees Behind the Queen as both an early turning point and an ongoing foundation within his photographic practice. Since its original presentation, the project has continued to evolve through new institutional contexts, including a presentation with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and now the Woman’s Club of Wisconsin.

At the Woman’s Club of Wisconsin, Behind the Queen is revisited with greater distance, care, and clarity. The exhibition reflects on performance, memory, fashion, and the people who shaped the project, while opening a new chapter for future work centered on portraiture, identity, and constructed image making.
