Artist Resource Transnational: A Selection from the Collection

Artist Resource Transnational: Selections from the Collection: A.R.T. is a non-profit 501(c)3 arts organization that preserves artists’ legacies, lobbies for their creative rights, displays local artists, and creates an international exchange of exhibitions and educational programming. This show will raise money for A.R.T. through the sale of discounted and tax-deductible works of art at the David Barnett Gallery. Artists include Kees van Dongen, Rembrandt, Picasso, John Steuart Curry, Wayne Thiebaud, and many others. Each work will be offered at a discount, a donation to A.R.T. will be included in the sale, and all sales will be tax deductible.

On the Edge: The Labor and Environment of Dimensional Stone Quarries – Photographs by Michael Schultz

We are pleased to once again share Michael Schultz’s photography with our patrons and campus community. Over past 15 years, we have presented his Foundry Work (2010), Forge Work (2015), and his exploration of Electric Steel (2021). The present exhibition represents a departure from the metallurgical industries to focus on yet another industry borne out of the earth — quarry work. Through his work, we are treated to awe-inspiring views of an entire industry, from breaking and drilling to the stone cutters at work in refinement and finishing. The superbly crafted images celebrate the light within while directing our attention to the labor and laborers of heavy industry.

Seeing Through by Douglas Hyslop

Exploring themes of love and loss, fatherhood, and the existential, Douglas Hyslop’s work examines the human experience through narrative and symbology. With a background in philosophy and a keen knowledge of performance history and Shakespearean theater, Hyslop is interested in the larger ethical lessons of human behavior. It should be no surprise, therefore, that he has chosen to paint historically misunderstood subjects—clowns, harlequins, and jesters. Hyslop views clowns as truth-tellers; in Shakespearean plays, the king often trusts only his jester to tell the truth. Another subject—the blind harlequin—has a similar purpose; although sometimes a trickster, he is better able to “see” the truth because of his impairment.
