December 7, 1941 – February 22, 2025 – Keven J. Miyazaki

Kevin Miyazaki’s exhibition is an homage to his grandfather, who was labeled as an “enemy alien” and arrested on December 7, 1941. Miyazaki transformed the gallery space for viewers to confront the dark American history during World War II when more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned in concentration camps. Japanese American poet Brandon Shimoda has written a poem especially for the exhibition, which will be available as a takeaway on letterpress cards at the gallery.

THE WORST YEAR

Time is often represented as a calendar, a collection of boxes to cross off one by one. Through painting and storytelling, artist Christine Welman reimagines the months of the year as people, individuals with unique joys and struggles. Artist Statement: I hope THE WORST YEAR inspires viewers to approach 2025 (and every new year) as a chance to create, cherish the people in their lives, and embrace fresh beginnings.

Quilted Works by Bruce Seeds

Bruce Seed’s quilts will be on display throughout the hotel lobby. The artist’s work reflects his passion for color, form, and artistic exploration. Rather than following a set pattern, each quilt emerges through a process of discovery. The kaleidoscopic design is cut from a single fabric bolt, with the final outcome unknown at the start. As the process unfolds step by step, each stage builds on the last, leading to an unexpected yet cohesive result. It’s only at the end that the quilt reveals its true form, shaped by the journey of creation.

“As the Worst Has Already Happened” – Stephanie Sara Lifshutz

“This exhibition was borne of extensive autobiographical writing directly following the unexpected passing of my youngest brother, Avigdor Chai Avraham, z”l, in April 2021. The work chronicles some of the experiences of that night when I coincidentally happened to be at my grandparents’ home, getting updates over the phone while trying to break the news to them and handle the aftermath.  While revisiting my records of that experience with this type of grief has at times been contemplative, numb, or physically painful – as it had been in the moment; what was most surprising were the seemingly trivial details that I had documented and now share with you. This work is dedicated to the memory of my brother and would not have been possible without the support of my family and friends.  Special thanks to Random Neon LLC and West Coast Custom Designs LLC for their contributions.”
