The exhibition, which is drawn from The Warehouse’s permanent collection, features over 50 self-portraits by artists from 9 countries on 5 continents, including works by Cindy Sherman, Jim Dine, David Hockney, Carrie Mae Weems, and William Kentridge. The artists have created representations of themselves in a variety of mediums ranging from painting and photography, to ceramic, stone, glass, and video. The work varies from small scale intimate portraits to larger than life depictions of the artists.
I Am a Story will explore questions of identity and artistic intention. Through their work, the artists alternatively reveal themselves to the viewer, while at other times they conceal or disguise themselves. Self-portraiture has a long lineage in the history of art. Through the works in the exhibition, the artists often show themselves actively working at their craft and engaging with the artistic tradition of self-portraiture, at times very directly.
The guest curator of this exhibition is Nick Pipho. Nick previously curated exhibitions at the Union Art Gallery while completing his Master’s degree in Art History at UW-Milwaukee. He also assists with The Warehouse’s exhibitions as a preparator.
COPA (Coalition of Photographic Arts) will present a complementary Pop-up exhibition entitled: I Witness: Photographic Portraiture in the South Galleries at Guardian from September 21 – October 21, 2020. COPA defines “Portrait” as a single subject within in the frame, and I Witness will include a range of subjects from figurative to botanical to fashion.
The 2nd Annual This is America exhibition is a consciously curated group show with visual artworks by 19 exceptional artists from traditionally overlooked vantage points, responding to patriotism, nationalism, and the current times. Works on display are as diverse as the artist profiles and include, but are not limited to, paintings, drawings, digital and mixed media collages, relief prints, photography, sculptures, conceptual installations and wearable art.
This Is America is meant to, both, corroborate and challenge the notion of Americanism, citizenship and belonging, racial representation, historical and cultural influence, religious freedom, national and global amnesty, and pride and prejudice in iconography associated with the red, white and blue, stars and stripes. With a breadth of work reflecting upon current and historical concepts and lived experiences, viewers are posed to find commonality or grapple with divergent perspectives tied to their nationalistic, political, and racial identities.

The King Drive Gallery and Studio is proud to present the work of LeRoi Johnson, a prolific artist based in Buffalo, NY. Curator Marquita Edwards, finds his artwork fascinating and excited to introduce him to Milwaukee. Dubbed electric primitive artist, his work includes surreal images, vibrant colors, and geometric abstractions in the service of personal stories about the African experience in the Americas.
LeRoi is a prominent lawyer who recently received the Lawyer of the Year Award in Buffalo, NY. And navigates both his careers quite well.
LeRoi C. Johnson has been seen around the globe many times throughout his career, and during the 2019 London Biennial he won two of the highest awards with his masterpiece – Colored People III, placed third out of 120 Artists for the Information Confederation of Art Critics Award and a Special Mention Award for Excellence.LeRoi’s advice for young or inspiring artists is, “whether you are studied or self-taught, establish an identity and then paint, paint, and then paint and love what you do.”

Artists included in this exhibition have engaged in slow and intentional examination of everyday points of contact encounters with people, with emotion, with time, and with the world as sites of curiosity and impact. The resulting works of art are unified by the use of skins, surfaces, screens, and other literalized contact zones as a point of departure for artistic inquiry into the human condition. The exhibition includes work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Ragen Moss, Rachel Rose, Christina Ramberg, and others.
