Black & Brown Only: Home

 

Black & Brown Only: Home is an immersive installation by eight Milwaukee Black and Brown artists, curated by Pamela Nanét. Instead of hanging work on white walls, the artists built a home inside the gallery: a communal table, kitchenette, lounge, and resting space where art is lived with, not displayed. Guests remove their shoes at the threshold, and photography is not permitted inside. Featuring Conhg Lopez Ausencio, Aida El-Hajjar, DeMar Walker, Lloyd Flow Johnson, Shana Lucas, Nicole Acosta, Ash Ernesto, and Anthony and Louie Brewer.

The Otherworld Is Home

The museum hosts free-to-the-public exhibitions inviting a journey across multiple centuries and continents in “The Otherworld is Home.” Inspired by the Yorùbá proverb, “Life is a journey, the otherworld is home,” the museum-wide presentation explores themes of personal reclamation, cultural identity, spiritual passage, and connection across Africa’s many diasporas. Three simultaneous exhibitions — “African Art: Ancient Roots, Enduring Values;” “Iké Udé: Sartorial Anarchy;” and “Thresholds” — offer opportunities to explore the enduring resonance of African artistic traditions and their continued influence.

Re:Connect 

Re:Connect brings together two artists, Ellie Hogan and Sarah Lothian, whose practices explore connection as a fundamental part of how we understand ourselves, our histories, and the world around us. While their subjects differ, both artists use layering, repetition, and tactile processes to reveal connections that might otherwise remain unseen. Together, their work reminds us that connection continuously shapes who we are and how we understand the world. This culminating exhibition for AP3’s 2025-2026 Emerging Artist Residency will be on view through Oct. 30, and the artists will host an event each weekend.

Two Nights. One Creative Experience: From Art to Music to Food! 

Janus College Preparatory & Arts Academies and Janus Liberal Arts High School will showcase how education, creativity, and community intersect. Located in Milwaukee’s historic Theater District, the two-night experience will highlight visual art, live music, performance, culinary arts, and hands-on learning. On Friday, guests can tour our space, learn about JCPAA and JLA, experience live artistic presentations, and enjoy a light culinary sampling featuring ingredients from our growing systems. Saturday will feature a pop-up arts experience combining visual art, music, and a special culinary treat. Together, JCPAA and JLA demonstrate how the arts inspire learning, creativity, and future possibilities.

Join us and discover the creative work of Denise DeKeuster’s Personal Healing Gardens Studio and Tony Macias’s Looking Wolf Studio, part of the growing hRAD community — a place where artists, makers, teachers, and neighbors come together to create, learn, share ideas, and support one another. Explore Denise’s healing-centered clay artwork, inspired by gardens, nature, and personal reflection. Through tactile forms, organic textures, and imaginative garden-inspired pieces, her work invites us to slow down, reconnect, and consider how art and nature can nurture comfort, renewal, and emotional well-being. Alongside Denise’s work, discover Tony’s ceramics, including sculptural forms, vessels, and Raku-fired pieces. Talk to Tony about current and upcoming classes, workshops, open studio opportunities, and ways to participate in hRAD’s creative life.
