Screen Time: Video Art and Photography in the Age of the Internet

Separated by geography, ethnicity and gender — but united in their concern with the onslaught of information in the twenty-first century — the artists of “Screen Time” reference historical photography and video art. They exhibit a fresh sensibility of humor, self-awareness and inter-subjectivity while tackling serious issues of identity in a society that is by turns — and swipes — self-obsessed, skeptical, nostalgic and funny.

Masterstrokes: Three Centuries of Drawing

The David Barnett Gallery presents Masterstrokes: Three Centuries of Drawing. Throughout history, drawing has been regarded as the foundation for artistic practice and the very basis for the visual arts. Drawing can be a kind of chameleon, morphing from linear to painterly. This exhibition will examine the exploratory nature of drawing — its emphasis on observation, problem-solving, and composition — and how it shows the artist’s hand in a range of styles from realistic to abstract. Drawing, a crucial part of artistic tradition, has become a tool for aesthetic thought and investigation and a vital medium in its own right.

Patterns of Meaning: The Art of Industry by Cory Bonnet

In June 2021, Pittsburgh artist and preservationist Cory Bonnet, along with scrap dealer Chip Barletto, acquired an enormous collection of wooden casting patterns from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Since then, ten 26-foot box trucks filled with patterns have made their way to Bonnet’s studio in the Energy Innovation Center (EIC) at the foot of Pittsburgh’s Hill District. The sheer scale of the collection ultimately led Bonnet to assemble a multidisciplinary group of artists to fully explore its potential.

Since Patterns of Meaning was first exhibited at the EIC, the collection continues to grow and evolve through Bonnet’s collaboration with the Patterns creative team of Angela Neira, Nate Lucas, Brian Engel, AJ Collins, Mia Tarducci and Andrew Moschetta. This special exhibition at the Grohmann Museum will be the first museum exhibition of this breathtaking collection merging art and industry. Do not miss this final opportunity to experience this one-of-a-kind display firsthand.

JMG is pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring new work by Barbara Campbell Thomas (NC) & Amy Sacksteder (MI). Barbara Campbell Thomas’s paintings harness geometric abstraction and a materially rich surface of paint, collage and sewn fabric to explore how her ancestral past shapes who she is as an artist. Amy Sacksteder’s work explores personal and collective relationships to landscape and artifact. She works across media, most commonly in painting, collage, drawing, cut paper, installation and ceramics.

Musings on Dairy Farms – Pastels by Judith Friebert

For years, Judith Friebert focused on depicting familyowned dairy farms. As a child, she accompanied her parents — the Milwaukee artists Joseph and Betsy Ritz Friebert — on sketching trips in the countryside. They were often drawn to Wisconsin’s legendary dairy farms. The farmers were friendly, pleased to have their land admired in this way. Years later, living in Massachusetts, Friebert began to explore this subject again. Moving to her native state five years ago, she found similar pastoral subjects to portray, although not nearly as many as before: In the current era of corporate dairy farming, small farms struggle to survive.
